Dodging both Halloween AND the launch of a new Ghostbusters movie is the latest DLC for The Sims 4, the Paranormal Stuff Pack. It’s out now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5 and PC.
We’ve lost count of the packs that you can bolt onto your copy of The Sims 4, but this one looks more substantial (if incorporeal) than most. It’s got a spoopy Goosebumps by way of Ghostbusters vibe to it, and – unlike a lot of the more wayward DLC (Star Wars, we’re looking at you) – this one feels like it would fit a conventional neighbourhood, as every street needs a spooky, uninhabited mansion.
The DLC comes with a new haunted lot, and houses built here get the ‘buried on a burial ground’ treatment. Doors slam, ghosts wail, voodoo dolls appear in unwanted places and the lights flicker overhead. To make the most of these lots, you’re going to have to master ghost-whispering, but you have help in the form of Claude René Duplantier Guidry, your ‘spirit guide’.
He will teach you about the many ways to appease the more playful ghosts and the downright malevolent ones. You’ll need to tidy up their mess, and leave gifts where suitable. But neglect them, and you’ll have to call a seance: a new event and table that will commune with the dead and put them to rites. This will up your Medium skill.
Work hard enough for Guidry and you’ll unlock the new profession of Paranormal Investigator, giving you the licence to hoover up ghosts and scoop up all that errant ectoplasm. As you’d expect from a The Sims 4 DLC, there’s also more costumes, furniture and furnishings than you can shake a severed limb at, so you can at least look a tad spoopy for when Halloween 2021 turns up.
